Collaborating on effective conservation solutions for the increasing challenges

Published Oct 08, 2024

Water utilities across the country are being challenged by unpredictable climate patterns, changing regulations, rising costs, and water shortages. Additionally, people across the U.S. are experiencing unprecedented heatwaves, destructive storms in certain areas, and drought conditions. All of this highlights the importance of conservation efforts and emphasizes the critical need for ongoing collaboration to develop effective solutions to address these diverse challenges.

Recognizing the changing landscape and understanding that the world's water supply is limited, professionals specializing in conservation, green infrastructure, water resources, and communications gathered at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Expo (WSI)  hosted by the American Water Works Association. It’s an annual event that provides a forum to discuss the development of new technologies, strategies, and programs to protect and conserve water supplies. WSI is the largest urban water-efficiency conference of its kind. , AMWUA and many of the AMWUA cities took part in the event as speakers, showcasing Arizona’s expertise and leadership in conservation.

The two-day event was packed with sessions where participants actively exchanged innovative ideas and engaged in spirited discussions about the impact of conservation efforts across the country and the evolving trends in water demand. It was clear that the challenges in the water industry are deepening. Still, the focus on sharing innovative strategies, initiatives, programs, and creative outreach ideas highlighted the potential for collaborative solutions to emerge. It's all about working together and combining efforts to create impactful and sustainable strategies for conservation.

Besides the workshops and break-out sessions, attendees also had the opportunity to explore the expo. There, they gained insights into the latest technologies that enhance efficiency and the variety of options for expanding programs, advanced water products, services, water-saving technologies, and conservation programs across the country, including AMWUA’s efforts. Being part of the expo was a prime opportunity to showcase the diverse conservation programs, resources, and tools  the AMWUA cities offer, designed to help residents save water indoors and outdoors, further strengthening our robust conservation ethic here in the Valley.

The event successfully inspired and informed participants about the crucial need for ongoing collaboration to promote water conservation. It also served as a platform to establish productive connections with dedicated water experts from across the country. This networking opportunity is invaluable in cultivating mutual objectives for the greater good and driving progress in water conservation to enhance our collective water management efforts.

Conservation is crucial for better ensuring the sustainable management of our water resources. By advocating for responsible water usage and implementing efficient water conservation practices, we can actively work towards addressing water challenges and securing a more sustainable water future for the benefit of future generations.
